Understanding the qualities that define a diamond's beauty, rarity, and value.
Every diamond is unique. The GIA and IGI 4Cs — Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat Weight — are the universal language jewellers and gemologists use to describe and compare diamonds. Understanding these four characteristics will help you choose the diamond that's perfect for you.
Color measures how white or colorless a diamond appears. Diamonds are graded from D (completely colorless) to Z (noticeable yellow tint). The less color a diamond has, the more valuable and premium it is considered.
Diamonds in the D–F range are completely colorless — the rarest and most valuable. G–H diamonds appear nearly colorless to the naked eye and offer an excellent balance of beauty and value for buyers.
Clarity refers to the presence of internal inclusions or external blemishes in a diamond. Most of these are natural characteristics formed deep within the earth, and the vast majority are invisible to the naked eye.
Higher clarity grades such as VVS or VS mean the diamond appears clean and beautiful, while lower clarity grades may show visible flaws. VS and VVS are considered the best choice for quality and value.
The cut of a diamond is the most important of the 4Cs — it directly determines how much the diamond sparkles. Cut refers to how precisely the diamond is shaped and polished to reflect and refract light.
A perfectly cut diamond reflects light beautifully from facet to facet, creating maximum brilliance, fire, and scintillation. A poorly cut diamond, even with excellent color and clarity, will appear dull and lifeless.
Excellent and Ideal cut diamonds are always recommended for maximum beauty and light performance. That's why cut is never a place to compromise.
Carat refers to the weight of a diamond, not its physical size. One carat equals 0.20 grams, and is further divided into 100 points — so 0.50 CT equals 50 points, and 1.00 CT equals 100 points.
As carat weight increases, price rises significantly because larger diamonds are far rarer in nature. However, two diamonds of the same carat weight can look very different in size depending on their cut proportions.
A well-cut diamond always appears larger and more brilliant than a deep or poorly cut diamond of the same weight.
Every diamond we offer comes certified by either GIA or IGI — the world's two most trusted independent gemological laboratories. A certificate is your assurance that the diamond has been objectively graded and is exactly what it claims to be.
